homemade gift

Homemade gift for a special friend,

someone who shares the same passion for baking...

someone who fares way better than me in keeping....
her household of three active children with a full time job and without a helper...

someone who cares to listen to a housewife's never ending ramblings...

Freshly baked mooncakes for my friend....with my lack of skills, they are nothing close to store bought ones...

but, as the saying goes, best gifts come from the heart, not the wallet...

well, I do feel thick-skinned to give my humble mooncakes away...for my friend would need to pay a high price for them...

that is, for wasting her calories on yucky food, paiseh paiseh (^_^''')

little fishes...

tiny rabbits....

specially for her children...I don't think they will mind the empty calories ;)

Recipe from here and here.

So cute. YOu are right, gift does not need to be valued by the $$ and cents. It is the heart that matters.

Hi HHB, I wouldn't mind being the recipient. Lovely mooncakes. My family prefers snow skin mooncakes to baked ones. Your are very creative, the mooncakes are so cute.

Edith, if everybody could think like you, I am sure you know what I mean, there are many who measure things only by the dollar sign ;)

The Experimental Cook, happy mooncake festival to you too!

Phong Hong, I think my mooncakes cannot match those store bought ones, especially those from hotels and restaurants, made by sifu!

melonpan, I am sorry, not sure what you are referring to?

Bee Bee, I worry, 好看不好吃...

Kimmy, going to make the snowskin ones soon...the baked ones need to make in advance as it needs 1 to 2 days for them to soften (回油).

鲸鱼, 这些只能拿来骗小孩 :)

Thanks Fiona!

MJ, I used an egg mould to make the little fishes, as for the bunnies, just need to shape into a round and stick on the ears...no skills required, anyone can do it!

Oooh, I wish I was daring enough to try making my own moon cake. I doubt I can find pre made fillings here in Perth. :(. Love the cute rabbits!

Hi HHB, I hope you don't mind me asking about your oven here. After reading your review about your Bosch oven, I also bought one too. It's really a good oven with even heat. Thank a lot for your review. Have you tried to bake 2 tiers cupcakes or muffin? - Sue Chua

Hi Sue, did u get the exact same model? So far I have baked 2 tiers of cookies, bread buns, mooncakes and pizza (no muffins yet since I dont bake in big batches). I used the drip tray to double up as baking tray at the bottom rack. So far so good, even browning even for the bottom tray. I usually use the 3D hot air function (the one with the fan icon) if I need to bake on two racks, but with the fan on, the oven temp is higher, so need to adjust/monitor closely. hope this helps.

Hi Wendy, if I remember correctly, i got it from BHG at Bugis junction.

Hi HHB the one you bought was obsoleted and so I bought another model which is also provide 5 functions only. There was promotion and I paid less than $1K. I feel it's really a good buy after using a few times. Since you have tried baked 2 tiers of breads and mooncakes, I foresee it should work well with muffins too. Thanks for your reply ^.^* Sue Chua

Hi, u mentioned abt using the fan assisted mode for baking, did u use the same mode for baking your mooncakes as well. I used the top n bottom mode but the colour turned out uneven, unlike yours browned very evenly. Lovely. Tks...jeannie

Happy Homebaker said...

Hi Jeannie, yes, I usually use the fan mode whenever I need to bake on two racks/trays.
